Songs To Live And Die For
 by Rip Smops

The slightly “lo-fi” remake of the even more “lo-fi” 1985 cassette. More angry punk rock stuff.

Life is Sad
 by Rip Smops

Life is Sad

Music:
It all comes down to:
A bottling of sonic expressions:
All the myriad emotions that permeate a life:
You can hear it.
Pretentious:
Perhaps:
This music says it. Not these words.

 THE GATE OF UNCONSCIOUSNESS

  • How does sleep happen?

 ARTIFICIAL ANIMALS

  • It could have turned out a lot differently.

 LIFE IS SAD

  • Face it. Sing it.

Songs To Get Depressed About
 by Rip Smops

Songs To Get Depressed About

The remake of the tape I made in 1983. These are songs I wrote during my youth in the late 70's and early 80's, played and recorded with relative adult professionalism. The songs are serious, melodic, and/or rocking, and concern matters of restlessness, rebellion, and the questioning that arises when one is confronted with the disappointments that life likes to offer. Also songs about cows, doors, and bricks.

 I HOPE IT'S SOON

  • Time advances so very slowly when you're a restless youth with something to prove.

 CLEAN WITH DIRT

  • Written by Ira Dostioffski. A rocker concerning the unconscionable greed of the horror movie industry.

Eliminate Freedom
 by Rip Smops

Eliminate Freedom

Some songs taking a hard look at the self-deception caused by misguided belief in government, civilization, and idealism. Rock tunes untidily spattered with musical "jimmies". The title track addresses an unfortunate trend in contemporary America.

Beatiful Frustration
 by Rip Smops

Beautiful Frustration

A "demo" showing what I would sound like if/when I ever/will perform live solo. A departure from the usual Rip Smops maximalist multitrack approach: just keyboard or guitar and singing. Some songs from "The Sound No One Wants To Hear" and others.

My Heterosexual Girlfriend
by Rip Smops

A mini compilation assembled in 2000 of some of my "catchier" songs, each intended for inclusion on one of several unfinished future albums.
1 -- CHASING THE COWS
Human civilization is artificial and some sensitive artists need to escape into a more believable species of socialization. Written on a cow farm in upstate New York.

2 --

MY HETEROSEXUAL GIRLFRIEND
Many flirtatious people like to carelessly toy with the hearts of well meaning lonesome people. These flirtations, though not maliciously intended, can be very hurtful.

3 -- HOBO DELI
In New Paltz, New York in the early 80's was a grocery named Hobo Deli, where local and traveling vagabonds would hang out on the front steps. I was thrown out of town before having an opportunity to sample the range of their products, so I wrote a phantasmagoric ditty imagining what they might have offered.

4 -- WINDOW
Living in a large city can be very limiting and belittling. Many developments occur over which no one has control.

DROP OUT OF YOUR MIND
by The Pies

Recorded 1989-1990 in Jersey City with guitarist/keyboardist Ira Dostioffski. Bouncy, comical, diverse, childishly weird. This is probably the closest I'll get to having made a "pop" album. With ventures into reggae, punk, fake jazz, regular rock, old style electronic, ice cream truck music, and ten second songs.

1 -- I LOVED YOU BEFORE WE WERE BORN
A cute bouncy love song about a happy couple with a trusting dog.

2 --

WIRING YOUR OWN FOOTSWITCH
ANY BEARING ANY CLUE
RUNNING UP A BILL
DUB DROP OUT (excerpt)
Some short songs leading up to the closing song, a reggae opus advocating rejection of establishment rule.

Frequent Ruins
by Stephen Drake and Erik Von Rippy

Click For Ordering Info

Recorded 1985-1993, in Nashville and San Francisco. A completely interactionless collaboration with Nashville Symphony Orchestra cellist Stephen Drake. In 1987 he sent me a tape of some instrumental tracks of some tunes he had thought up and titled. He suggested that I add my own tracks to complete them. I had been enjoying driving around Nebraska a bit in those days, and I decided that all the songs should be about Nebraska. I came up with a vague story concept about a discouraged rock and roll drifter who finds an abandoned farm house. I kept the original song titles, and gave myself the challenge of writing lyrics about Nebraska that incorporated titles that didn't suggest anything remotely relating to Nebraska. The music is sometimes synthesizery, sometimes rocking, sometimes quiet, sometimes in between.

1 -- WALL DRUM
A descriptive song portraying details of Nebraska's landscape.

2 --

COLE SLAW SONG (excerpt)
A hyperactive rock & roller searches for a meaningful way to slow down.

The Sound No One Wants To Hear
by Erik Von Rippy

Recorded 1987-1993 in San Francisco. Everything on it entirely done by Rippy. My large scale expression of frustration, depression, anger towards society, and general negativity. Musically based on hardcore punk, taking its energy, speed and brevity, and then adding a strong dose of determined musical creativity. I tried to blow the lid off that old shit. This is MUSIC, and it is FAST and ANGRY. Lots of drums, words, keyboards, noises, guitars, kalimbas. People call it "Lo-Fi". 30 one minute songs and one 4 1/2 minute song.

1 -- ALIEN NATION
I am expected to perform incomprehensible acts in order to avoid being cast out of society. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

2 --

THE SOUND NO ONE WANTS TO MAKE
We know we absolutely must not reveal certain truths about ourselves.

3 -- HATRED'S THE MISSING LINK
Much has been said about love's power to connect people. Hate can do the same thing, but nobody is saying anything.
